When courses run, how long to go for, what they cost, English levels, visas and when to book — everything to plan a UK summer school for 2027.
WBS · Updated 21 October 2026

Every summer, Britain's boarding schools and universities open their campuses to students from around the world. A good summer school combines lessons, sport, excursions and boarding-school life, and many children come home more confident, more independent and with friends from a dozen countries. This guide explains how to choose one for summer 2027.
When do UK summer schools run?
Most residential courses run from late June to mid-August. Across the courses on our site, the earliest 2027 start date is 27 June and most courses finish by mid-August. Pre-sessional courses for students about to start at a UK school run later, into early September.
Courses usually start on fixed days — often a weekend — so check the arrival and departure dates before booking flights.
How long should my child go for?
Length | Suits | Notes |
|---|---|---|
1 week | First-time boarders, younger children (7–10) | A taster. Some schools only offer 1-week places for juniors. |
2 weeks | Most students | The most common option — about two-thirds of courses on our site start at 2 weeks. |
3–6 weeks | Students focused on English or exam preparation | Longer stays make the biggest difference to spoken English. |
Types of course
- English language + activities — lessons in the morning (typically 15–20 hours a week), sport and activities in the afternoon, excursions at weekends. The most popular choice for international students. Ages 8–17.
- Academic and university preparation — subject courses such as medicine, law, business or STEM, or preparation for A level, IB and UK school entry. Usually ages 13–18 and often need at least B1 English.
- Leadership, debate and enterprise — project-based courses that build confidence and presentation skills.
- Arts, sport and adventure — creative arts, performing arts, outdoor adventure and multi-sport programmes.
Use our course finder to filter by age, interest, length and English level.
How much does it cost?
On our site, residential courses cost from about £1,200 to £2,700 per week, including tuition, full board, activities and most excursions. The middle of the range is about £1,950 per week. Watch for extras such as airport transfers outside the set times and optional exams. Our cost guide breaks this down.
English level
Many English-plus-activity courses accept beginners (A1). Academic courses usually ask for B1 or above, and some advanced programmes ask for B2. Schools often test students on arrival and place them in the right class.
Safety and accreditation
Look for courses accredited by the British Council (for English-language provision) or another recognised body, and ask who stays in the boarding house overnight, whether staff are on call 24 hours, how airport transfers work and who the named safeguarding lead is. See our safety guide.
Visas
Many nationalities need a visa to study on a short course in the UK. Students from mainland China need a Standard Visitor visa for courses of up to six months; holders of Hong Kong and Macao SAR passports don't need a visa but must get an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling. See our visa guide.
When to book
Popular courses at well-known schools fill early. We recommend:
- October–December: shortlist courses and ask us about availability.
- December–February: secure a place, ideally before early-booking deadlines (some courses offer discounts until the end of December or January).
- Three months before travel: apply for the visa (Hong Kong/Macao passports: apply for an ETA a few weeks before).
- Six weeks before: book flights to match the transfer times.
